Nokia’s Beastly 41MP 808 PureView Phone Not Coming to North America

Nokia’s Beastly 41MP 808 PureView Phone Not Coming to North America

Nokia caused quite a ripple in the mobile phone market last week by announcing its new 41-megapixel 808 PureView smartphone. However, if you live in North America and have been drooling over the phone, here’s some bad news: Nokia isn’t planning to sell the phone on our continent. On the 808′s official product page, Nokia has included a footnote that says “Excluding North America” for the phone’s global availability. The reason may be that US carriers aren’t willing to subsidize the 00 phone and aren’t interested in Nokia’s Symbian Belle OS. On the bright side, rumor has it that Nokia is working to bring its PureView technology to Windows Phones.

Behind the Scenes: Picking Newsweek’s Cover is Quite the Process

Newsweek’s new Tumblr shows off the magazine’s unused covers from each issue

Have you ever wondered how a major magazine like Newsweek chooses a cover image? For their newest issue, they ended up going with the one above for the cover story “The Politics of Sex”, but what about the ones that didn’t make the cut? Well, Newsweek has recently set up a Tumblr account, and they’re showing off nine of the covers that didn’t make it.

What’s interesting is the three different approaches the designers took, including a text-based cover, nudes, and of course, the final choice, which went to an American flag-colored set of contraceptives.

The world of magazine covers is an interesting one. Time Magazine recently received some flak for altering its covers for US newsstands, and then there was the whole issue of Time using stock photography rather than original work. You have to wonder if major magazines will continue to contract multiple firms to pitch multiple cover shots, or, if more and more they’ll rely on cheaper sources.

Newsweek is touting its new Tumblr as a feature meant to show off these “also-ran” covers. We really look forward to seeing more of them as they come out, especially the ones that feature photojournalism.

Nikon to Stop Making Parts Available to Unauthorized Camera Repair Shops

In mid-January, Nikon sent an letter out to independent camera repair technicians across the US, informing them that “it will no longer make repair parts available for purchase by repair facilities that have not been authorized by Nikon Inc. to perform camera repairs.” After July 13th, 2012, unauthorized repair shops will no longer be able to repair Nikon cameras with official manufacturer-approved parts. iFixit writes,

Scott Jarvie, a full-time photographer, outlined his concerns with the policy in a detailed Google+ post. He demonstrates how silly the new policy seems by comparing cameras to cars. What if your car broke, and you went to your favorite mechanic, but he told you that you’re out of luck? Though he could fix your car by tomorrow, your car’s manufacturer will no longer allow him to buy the necessary parts. Instead, you have to send your car to your car manufacturer’s own repair shop (which, if we’re taking this analogy all the way, has a much poorer BBB rating than your own local shop) or one of two dozen manufacturer-authorized repair shops—oh, you don’t live near one of those? There’s not even one in your state? Too bad. Forget driving to work this week; you’re going to have to ship in your car.

If you want to speak out against this new policy, there’s an online petition you can sign that has already raised thousands of signatures.

Fujifilm X-Pro1 now shipping in Japan

The Fuji X-Pro1 mirrorless interchangeable lens camera is now shipping in Japan, just as Fujifilm promised last month. The North America market has to wait for another month, but I have the feeling that the camera will start shipping before March 20th in the US.
