Close-Up Photos of Wild Lions Captured with an Armored “BeetleCam”

UK-based wildlife photographers Will and Matt Burrard-Lucas got the Internet’s attention a couple years ago with the BeetleCam, a special remote controlled DSLR that allowed them to capture close-up photos of animals in the wild that photographers would have difficultly strolling up to. After the success of that experiment, they decided to return to Africa last summer with upgraded (and armored) versions of the BeetleCam in order to photograph lions in Kenya.

We had with us two BeetleCams. The first was an armoured version of the original BeetleCam, equipped with a Canon 550D. The second was a more advanced model, boasting a live video feed, HD movie recording and a Canon 1Ds MK III. We imaginatively named the more advanced buggy “BeetleCam Mark II”.

You can find more photos and read more about their experience — including a close call with a lion — over on their blog or the BeetleCam project page.

One billion slum dwellers

One billion people worldwide live in slums, a number that will likely double by 2030. The characteristics of slum life vary greatly between geographic regions, but they are generally inhabited by the very poor or socially disadvantaged. Slum buildings can be simple shacks or permanent and well-maintained structures but lack clean water, electricity, sanitation and other basic services. In this post, I’ve included images from several slums including Kibera slum in Nairobi, Kenya, the second largest slum in Africa (and the third largest in the world); New Building slum in central Malabo, Equatorial Guinea; Pinheirinho slum – where residents recently resisted police efforts to forcibly evict them; and slum dwellers from Kolkata, Mumbai and New Delhi, India. India has about 93 million slum dwellers and as much as 50% of New Delhi‘s population is thought to live in slums, 60% of Mumbai. — Paula Nelson (55 photos total)

What would Canon do? (5D Mark III)

The day Nikon announced their D800 monster, Canon came out with “only” three new lenses and some official samples from their top of the line EOS 1Dx camera. Nikon and Canon announcements are always scheduled few days/weeks apart and it seems that all the signs for a new 5D Mark III camera are here, including the mandatory book listing on Amazon with a release date of March 9th, 2012:

The rumored Canon 5D Mark III will have 22MP, 61 points AF, 6.9 fps and will probably be announced on February 28th, 2012. There is some talk that the 5D line may get split in two: 5D X and 5D Mark III.

Photographybay reported about a potential Canon Rebel T4i announcement in late February.

In terms of new Canon lenses, here is a possible roadmap:

EF 50 1.8 IS, status “prototype”, has tag “spring 2013″

EF 50 2.5 macro was tagged with “to be replaced”

EF 200 2.8 L IS macro is tagged with “testing”, “patents pending”, and “autumn 2013″

EF 24-70 2.8 L II tagged “final”, “winter 2011″

EF 100-400 4-5.6 L IS tagged “final”, “autumn 2012″

EF 35 1.4 L II tagged “prototype”, “winter 2012″

EF 60 L IS lens tagged “prototype”

EF-S 20-65 IS

EF-S 45-105 IS status “development”

EF-S 55-70 IS “testing”

EF-S 70-400 IS “prototype”

Canon 5D Mark III Spotted in Kenya?

Photographer Stephen Oachs over at Aperture Academy caused quite a stir yesterday after sharing some photographs he took of a Japanese photographer he spotted in Kenya. The photographer revealed that he was field testing a new Canon 200-400mm with a built-in teleconverter, but what caught Oachs attention was the camera body the man was using — a Canon DSLR that he didn’t recognize. He writes,

You can see it in the photos I took… I see the “Q” button located by the big wheel on the right, which on the 7D is currently located on the top left. The battery grip seems to have a joystick. I also noticed a “Rate” button…hrm, any ideas?

Is this the new 5D Mark III, or maybe the 7D Mark II? This info I was not able to determine.

Here’s a closer look at the camera:

Now compare it to the existing Canon 5D Mark II:

…and the Canon 7D:

What differences do you notice, and which line do you think this new camera is a part of? You can find the rest of the photographs here.

As a side note, the photographer told Oachs that he thinks that the new 200-400mm will be available sometime in March or April.

Canon 5D Mark III, 200-400mm, 600mm prototypes spotted in Kenya?

Take a look at those pictures published on Apertureacademy’s blog today – they were recently taken in Kenya and show a new Canon DSLR camera body (5D Mark III?) plus two new lens prototypes: 200-400mm and 600mm.

For comparison, here is the EOS 5D Mark II and the EOS 7D bodies from the same angle:
